Herniated Disc Treatment

Our spines take on the brunt of all our daily activities. To allow them to do this, we have small, round cushions along our spinal column that separate our vertebrae and provide a cushion that absorbs shocks and gives more room for nerves to pass out of the spinal cord. However, ongoing lower back pain, or a sharp, pinching pain higher up the back could be due to a herniated disc. Dr. Octavio Espinoza and his team at Regenerative Chiropractic, serving the Miami, FL area, can examine your back, confirm or determine if the pain is from a disc injury, and provide treatment to relieve the issue.

What is a Herniated Disc?

The discs of the spine are covered in a case called the annulus fibrosus. Though it is tough, it can still develop cracks or tears. A herniation (often called a “slipped” disc) is when the internal, gelatinous, part of the disc has left the annulus fibrosus through such a compromised part of the case.

What Causes a Herniated Disc?

Most instances of a herniated disc involve a sudden increase of pressure to the spine. This is usually done while lifting something heavy by doing so the wrong way. Lifting while bent over rather than lowering and keeping your back straight is the most common. Twisting or shifting directions while carrying a heavy load are other high risks.

The annulus fibrosus can also weaken over time, and the disc may lose some of its fluid. It can become easier to cause a herniated disc despite lifting less when the disc has degenerated.
